You Never Know

You Never Know

In 2013 I am trying to focus more on doing. Not thinking too much. Just getting out there and doing.

Last night I obeyed this new rule. And I am glad I did.

On a whim, I decided I would go perform a few songs in the Eddie Owen Presents open mic at Red Clay Theatre. There was much holding me back. The drive, my comfortable living room, and my amazing 5-month-old baby boy were a few factors that almost prevented me from going. But, I decided to fight the resistance and venture out.

It was a great night! Not only did my good friend Carl Dylan show up, but we met some really talented touring songwriters. I ended up swapping info with them and it looks like I have some new friends to play shows with in several different cities across the country! If I had just stayed home, I would have missed out on some new opportunities.

What opportunities might you miss out on if you don't step outside of what is familiar and try something new?

There are so many good things to say about Joy Ike. Since I met her in 2010 at Burlap and Bean, she's become quite a friend! Whenever I pass through Pittsburgh, I make sure to see her. And she always offers a place for me to crash.

I wanted to make sure that I featured Joy on this particular Friday, because she's got a NEW RECORD out! It dropped on January 22nd and you DEFINITELY need to go get it! It's called "All or Nothing". I have it and I am loving it! I am very proud to call her a friend.

Below is her music video for "Everything You Have" which is also available for FREE at NoiseTrade.com/joyike.

FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: SHERILYN

FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: SHERILYN
January 18, 2013
www.kurtscobie.com/blogs

I wish everyone knew SHERILYN. This week's "featured friend friday" is someone who is just SO caring and kind. And TALENTED! Few artists today can connect with the audience emotionally, but Sherilyn just draws you in. You can't help but want to hear her story.

I met Sherilyn several years ago when I first moved to Atlanta. She lead worship music at the church where Elizabeth and I attended. We were there for only a year before we each moved to different churches, and somewhat lost contact. In 2012 we ran into each other again and I discovered that she had begun a solo career outside of the church world.

We've become good friends and have done a few shows together. Hopefully, the future holds more shows and maybe even some co-writing! I am super excited for all that is in store for Sherilyn and I believe she is an artist to watch the next few years. I am honored to call her a friend.

Here's where you can connect with Sherilyn and listen to her music.

Running for Punita

"Running for Punita"

As many of you know, I am a pretty big running nerd. I have completed two half marathons, the Tough Mudder, and numerous other races in the past couple years and I have zero thoughts of quitting. I am one of those weirdos who enjoys running long distances.

My first big race in 2013 is the Publix Georgia Half Marathon on March 17th. And there is something extra special about this one. I'm running for Punita! And if you want to find out about what that means, you'll just have to read my "Team Scobie" blog. :) Here's the link: http://www.kurtscobie.com/teamscobie

Thanks for reading!

FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: Carl Dylan

"FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: Carl Dylan"
January 11th, 2013

Atlanta is a great place for music. Most people think of New York, L.A., and Nashville when it comes to cities with a "music scene". Well, I definitely believe that Atlanta needs to be on that list. There are so many great artists doing all different genres of music, and I'm blessed to know one of them who has some exciting things happening.

Carl Dylan has been pounding the pavement alongside me since I arrived to Georgia in 2006. I had zero contacts when I moved, so I was lucky to have met Carl early on. Here we are four years later and this singer/songwriter has toured the country, opening up for artists like Dave Barnes, and The Beach Boys!

And now, he is working on a new project and will be heading into the studio very soon to record. Producer Rick Beato (Shinedown, NEEDTOBREATHE) is taking on Carl's new project and I am SUPER excited to hear what comes about! Awesome stuff.

I hope you'll check out my talented friend, Carl Dylan. He's got some great songs and some great things going on. Here are some links.

Carl is not only a talented guitarist and singer, but he and his wife have been incredible friends to me and my family. I'm honored to have such a great friend.

Picasa!

"Picasa!"
 January 7th, 2013
 www.kurtscobie.com/blogs

I have been searching for a great way to share photos on the "pics" page on my website. I think I have found the solution.

As an advocate for just about anything Google, I was pleased (after several hours of searching) to find out that Picasa has the tools I was looking for. At kurtscobie.com/pics you'll now see the most recent albums from my Picasa account at the top of the page. Older posts will be at the bottom. Thanks to the Picasa "Embed Slideshow" function, I can upload photos (mostly from my phone) and create a slick album that can them be embedded as flash on my site.

If you can't tell, I am very excited about this. Maybe a little too excited...

If you began following my Tumblr posts you will still be able to view my pics that way. BUT, the BEST place is going to be on my website as I will be posting there first.

One of my goals for 2013 is to post more photos on my website. Picasa seems to be a great tool that will make that goal easier to attain. The first (of many) albums is displayed below. Enjoy!

FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: Mike Kinnebrew

"FEATURED FRIEND FRIDAY: Mike Kinnebrew"
January 4th, 2013

Two blogs in one day? Who am I?!

Well, I had this idea to promote some friends of mine this year. I am incredibly blessed with some great people in my life who encourage me and have really helped me get to where I am today. I am so very thankful.

So, this is my attempt at returning the favor, using this humble platform to give some shout-outs! Watch for one of these "Featured Friend Friday" posts each week in 2013.

The first shout-out goes out to my good friend, Mike Kinnebrew. Here are some links where you can check him out (PLEASE do).

I met Mike a few years ago at the legendary intimate music venue, Eddie's Attic! Mike is a Georgia-native so he had been playing at Eddie's before he was legally allowed to even be in that place. Mike and I hit it off from day one and since then we have done shows together, helped with each-other's songwriting, and Mike even came to the hospital when Elizabeth and I went through the loss of our baby, Bella! This guy is not only a true artist, but a true friend. I'm blessed to know him.

So, please do me (and yourself) a favor and check out Mike Kinnebrew. He is one to watch!

Kurt

P.S. Mike has a show TONIGHT at Eddie's Attic.

I can hardly believe it has been TWO YEARS (today) since the release of "Crash". It seems like just yesterday(ish) I trekked up to Michigan and began the recording process. I had no idea that this little EP would reach so many. So many unexpected places these six songs have popped up over the past 24 months. I am pleased, to put it simply.

I am extremely grateful for all the support I receive for my music. It is especially rewarding to hear how different folks connect with a song or certain lyric. So, thank you. Thank you for listening, for sharing, and for following along with it all.

To celebrate, I have uploaded "Crash" to SoundCloud and you can now stream the whole EP for FREE! Visit my SoundCloud page OR go to kurtscobie.com/crash

Cheers!

ONE Resolution for 2013

"ONE Resolution for 2013"
January 1st, 2013
www.kurtscobie.com/blogs

I've got just ONE resolution for 2013. Are you ready?

Here it is...

DO!

Yup. Do.

I'm focusing on that which I need and want to DO, not what I don't or shouldn't. Its not that I'm going to just do whatever, but I am not going to let the "don't" dictate the "do".

Here are a few quotes that sum it up. I hope these rock your world as much as they have rocked mine.

"I am convinced that the great tragedy is not the sins we commit, but the life that we fail to live." -Erwin McManus

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." -Carnegie, Dale

"A warm body doesn't mean I'm alive." -Switchfoot

This is so simple, yet it is so difficult to remain focused on doing. There are many distractions. The world wants to thwart our plans and derail our momentum. I resolve to fight, with all my energy, against the resistance.

I resolve to DO.

Bring it on, 2013!
